California Games (DOS) – The Ultimate 1980s Extreme Sports Classic

Few games capture the spirit of the late 1980s quite like California Games. Released by Epyx in 1987 and later ported to DOS, the game took the successful multi-event formula of Summer Games and Winter Games and traded traditional sports for a collection of California-inspired activities. Instead of running races or competing in Olympic events, players grabbed a skateboard, surfboard, BMX bike, or hacky sack and headed for the sunny beaches of the West Coast. (Wikipedia)

California Games features six distinct events: Half-Pipe Skateboarding, Footbag (Hacky Sack), Surfing, Roller Skating, Flying Disc, and BMX biking. Each event has its own controls, challenges, and learning curve, making the game feel like a collection of mini-games rather than a traditional sports title. Whether you're performing tricks on a skateboard or trying to impress judges with a perfect surfing run, every event requires practice and timing to master. (Epyx)

One of the game's most memorable features is its laid-back atmosphere. Bright beaches, palm trees, colorful graphics, and upbeat music helped distinguish California Games from other sports games of its era. The DOS version may not have the visual fidelity of modern games, but it perfectly captures the carefree California culture that inspired it. Players could also select fictional sponsors before competing, adding a touch of personality and replay value.

The gameplay varies dramatically between events. BMX requires quick reactions and precision, while Footbag tests rhythm and coordination. Surfing remains one of the most iconic events, challenging players to perform tricks while avoiding wipeouts and earning high scores from judges. Many players still remember the frustration and satisfaction of trying to perfect each discipline. Retro gaming communities frequently cite the surfing, hacky sack, and BMX events as their favorites.

California Games became one of Epyx's biggest successes, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and appearing on nearly every major computer and console platform of the era. Its popularity eventually led to a sequel, although the original remains the most fondly remembered entry in the series.

Today, California Games remains one of the defining sports games of the DOS era. Its combination of simple controls, addictive gameplay, and unmistakable 1980s style continues to make it a favorite among retro gamers. Thanks to GameYak, you can play California Games online directly in your browser and relive the days when extreme sports first arrived on home computers—no DOS installation or emulator setup required.
