Haunting Starring Polterguy (Genesis) – A Twisted and Hilarious Horror Classic

Released for the Sega Genesis in 1993, Haunting Starring Polterguy is one of the most original horror-comedy games of the 16-bit era. Developed and published by Electronic Arts, the game casts players as Polterguy, a mischievous ghost seeking revenge on the Sardini family after a fatal skateboarding accident involving a defective product from their company. Rather than fighting monsters or saving the world, your goal is to terrorize the family so thoroughly that they flee from house to house in fear.

The premise is delightfully unusual. As Polterguy, you haunt everyday household objects and spring elaborate scares on unsuspecting family members. Hide inside a television, a refrigerator, a toilet, or even a painting, then emerge at the perfect moment to send the Sardinis screaming. Each successful scare reduces their sanity meter, and once a family member's fear reaches its limit, they abandon the home and move to a new location.

The gameplay combines strategy, timing, and exploration. Every house contains dozens of objects that can be possessed, but not all scares are available immediately. Players must gather ectoplasm to power hauntings and avoid enemies known as Psyclones, supernatural creatures capable of damaging Polterguy's ghostly form. If Polterguy loses all of his energy, he is temporarily banished and must continue his haunting campaign from the spirit realm.

One of the game's greatest strengths is its creativity. Each room is packed with unique animations and humorous scare sequences. A seemingly ordinary object can transform into a bizarre monster, a giant mouth, or some other ridiculous apparition designed to frighten the Sardinis. The exaggerated reactions of the family members add to the comedy, making the game feel more like a cartoon than a traditional horror title.

Visually, Haunting makes excellent use of the Genesis hardware. Detailed environments, colorful sprites, and smooth animations help bring Polterguy's supernatural antics to life. The soundtrack and sound effects further enhance the spooky atmosphere while maintaining the game's playful tone.

Although it wasn't a major commercial success upon release, Haunting Starring Polterguy has developed a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts. Its unique concept remains unlike almost anything else released on the Genesis, and many fans consider it one of the system's most underrated titles.

Today, Haunting Starring Polterguy stands as a memorable example of creative game design from the 1990s. Players looking to revisit this quirky horror adventure can enjoy it online at GameYak, where the game can be played directly in a browser without requiring original Sega Genesis hardware. Whether you're a fan of retro horror, comedy games, or simply unusual gaming experiences, Polterguy's quest for revenge remains a hauntingly good time.
